New Standard for TPS Cable
01 Oct 2007
In line with rationalisation of cable standards between Australia and New Zealand the current New Zealand Standard NZS 6401:2000 will be withdrawn by the end of 2007.
This means that flat and circular TPS building wires previously manufactured to NZS 6401:2000 will now be manufactured to AS/NZ 5000.2:2006.
New Zealand cable manufacturers will be changing their current supply from NZS 6401 to AS/NZS 5000.2 over the next few months. Cables made to NZS 6401 held in stock can be used for the foreseeable future and will comply with the wiring standards.
The changes to the product from a physical aspect are minimal. The following changes will apply:
- The voltage rating of the cable changes from 600/1000V to 450/750 V and cables are fit for both single phase and 3 phase building wiring applications.
- The insulation rating of the cables increases from V-75 to V-90.
- AS/NZS 5000.2 covers cables up to 16 mm2 only (NZS 6401 covered cable up to 25mm2).
- All single and multi-core flat cables will continue to have an easy tear sheath.
- Multi-core circular cables will have a slightly tougher and thicker sheath to provide additional mechanical protection.
The New Zealand Gazette, No. 147 dated 23 November 2006, introduces a new Schedule of Electrical Appliances and Fittings requiring a Declaration of Compliance by the supplier before being offered for sale. The new Schedule, effective 1 February 2007, includes building wiring cable including flat and circular TPS. Installers and retailers of these cables must be satisfied that the product has a Declaration of Compliance from the supplier (importer or manufacturer) before it is installed. Most New Zealand manufacturers will have this Declaration on their web sites.
