Challenge 2009 is an electrical industry initiative to find the most outstanding individual with a flair for either domestic / commercial, or industrial work.
Open to senior electrical apprentices (that are in a current ITO training agreement as at 1st April 2009), Challenge 2009 is a competition-based event comprising of a nationwide preliminary round and New Zealand final.
So, (as at 1st April 2009) if you have at least 20 months on job experience, and have completed level 2 off job, then Challenge 2009 is just for you.
THE CHALLENGE FORMAT
A one-day (8 hour) elimination round will be staged nationwide on the 4 April 2009 (South Island and Auckland) and 18 April 2009 (rest of North Island). Please note these dates are Saturdays, but some regions may hold their competition on the day earlier (Friday).
With the top qualifiers (highest 5-7 scores from across the country in each section), invited to compete in the three day NZ final in Christchurch from 15 to 17 July.
In the preliminary round, you will be required to put together a working simulation of an everyday application – very similar to what you have done on block course. The New Zealand final is much of the same. Yes. It will be a bit more complex and a lot more time consuming, but it will also be a lot more rewarding for you, your employer and your training provider.
The preliminaries are being held in at least ten different centres across NZ, the sooner you get your completed entry in, the better chance you have of competing at a venue near you.
THE REWARDS - PRELIMINARY ROUND
Regional winners from each venue receive $200. With your employer and training provider receiving recognition of your success.
Naturally you can’t work on an empty stomach, so all food and drinks will be provided on the day to all competitors.
All those who compete in the preliminaries go into a pool to win one of ten draws of a $50 fuel voucher.
NEW ZEALAND FINAL
Both winners and second and third places all receive a travel prize, industry recognition and other cool gifts.
All other finalists receive $200, industry recognition and other cool gifts.
Grand finalists will travel to Christchurch, where accommodation, food, and travel expenses will be taken care of, as well as competing in the finals they will get to know Christchurch a little better, and also attend one of New Zealand’s largest electrical trade fairs.
Employers and training providers of every apprentice that makes it to the finals will each receive two complimentary tickets to the final awards dinner, industry recognition, and certificates.
